Here's their next move: The Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act, or CISPA, would obliterate any semblance of online privacy in the United States.  AND DON'T THINK IT DOESN'T AFFECT YOU IF YOU LIVE ELSEWHERE!!  The knock on effects will be global.

And CISPA would provide a victory for content owners who were shell-shocked by the unprecedented outpouring of activism in opposition to SOPA and Internet censorship.

The House of Representatives is planning to take up CISPA later this month. Click here to ask your lawmakers to oppose it.

SOPA was pushed as a remedy to the supposed economic threat of online piracy -- but economic fear-mongering didn't quite do the trick.

So those concerned about copyright are engaging in sleight of hand, appending their legislation to a bill that most Americans will assume is about keeping them safe from bad guys.

This so-called cyber security bill aims to prevent theft of "government information" and "intellectual property" and could let ISPs block your access to websites -- or the whole Internet.

Don't let them push this back-door SOPA. Click here to demand that your lawmakers oppose CISPA.

CISPA also encourages companies to share information about you with the government and other corporations.

That data could then be used for just about anything -- from prosecuting crimes to ad placements.

And perhaps worst of all, CISPA supercedes all other online privacy protections.

Please click here to urge your lawmakers to oppose CISPA when it comes up for a vote this month.

Thanks for fighting for the Internet.

Listening to Jim Byrnes this cold spring afternoon and surfing the 'net brought me to this... and made my heart ache in a rather pleasant way. I really hope there'll be another Hl con (preferably in europe) that I can manage to attend (this March was really a no-go, on account of me spending all th money I did not have for professional continuing education, and the dates overlapped too). And, well, no matter what. Highlander - still totally the awesomest fandom. You never forget your first;)

Beware ACTA

ACTA in a Nutshell –

What is ACTA?  ACTA is the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement. A new intellectual property enforcement treaty being negotiated by the United States, the European Community, Switzerland, and Japan, with Australia, the Republic of Korea, New Zealand, Mexico, Jordan, Morocco, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, and Canada recently announcing that they will join in as well.

Why should you care about ACTA? Initial reports indicate that the treaty will have a very broad scope and will involve new tools targeting “Internet distribution and information technology.”

What is the goal of ACTA? Reportedly the goal is to create new legal standards of intellectual property enforcement, as well as increased international cooperation, an example of which would be an increase in information sharing between signatory countries’ law enforcement agencies.

Essential ACTA Resources

  • Read more about ACTA here: ACTA Fact Sheet
  • Read the authentic version of the ACTA text as of 15 April 2011, as finalized by participating countries here: ACTA Finalized Text
  • Follow the history of the treaty’s formation here: ACTA history
  • Read letters from U.S. Senator Ron Wyden wherein he challenges the constitutionality of ACTA: Letter 1 | Letter 2 | Read the Administration’s Response to Wyden’s First Letter here: Response
  • Watch a short informative video on ACTA: ACTA Video
  • Watch a lulzy video on ACTA: Lulzy Video

Say NO to ACTA. It is essential to spread awareness and get the word out on ACTA.

Well, the year is drawing to a close, there's three days off work ahead of me and there's even some snow dusting the ground...

I plan to do nothing but sleep and eat good food and read - especially all the wonderful stories posted at hlh_shortcuts (and I've had a most wonderful gift filled with Amanda and glee and romance and captivating plot and yay!) and then sleep some more. And not think about unpleasant things for a while. And visit Granny in the hospital on Monday.

So, happy whatever-holidays-or-other-kinds-of-days to all of you - and may again the days get longer, and may those days be better than the ones before:)

Website Blocking

The government can order service providers to block websites for infringing links posted by any users.

Risk of Jail for Ordinary Users

It becomes a felony with a potential 5 year sentence to stream a copyrighted work that would cost more than $2,500 to license, even if you are a totally noncommercial user, e.g. singing a pop song on Facebook.

Chaos for the Internet

Thousands of sites that are legal under the DMCA would face new legal threats. People trying to keep the internet more secure wouldn't be able to rely on the integrity of the DNS system.

Read this analysis from boing-boing.net

Get on the phone and call your representative. Express your disapproval. Tell him or her exactly how you feel, and that you don't support this. Tell your friends to call their representatives, their Congressperson, and complain. Mention that you are a registered voter that takes your civic responsibility seriously and that you will use that vote to express your feelings about this.

“We support the bill’s stated goals — providing additional enforcement tools to combat foreign ‘rogue’ websites that are dedicated to copyright infringement or counterfeiting,” the Internet companies wrote in Tuesday’s letter. “Unfortunately, the bills as drafted would expose law-abiding U.S. Internet and technology companies to new uncertain liabilities, private rights of action and technology mandates that would require monitoring of websites.”  The chamber-led coalition in support of the bill includes Walmart, Eli Lilly & Co. and Netflix.

Google and other opponents of the legislation argue that restricting the Internet in the U.S. sets a bad international precedent and that the language defines infringing too broadly.

b)I have this weird hankering for Amanda/Joe stories, of a mischief-shared-good-buddy kind, possibly with a bit of friendly sex included as a cherry on top:).
c)I still have and probably always will have a massive crush on Amanda. And possibly a teensy-tiny one on Liz Gracen.
...this brought to you by exhaustion after a blue Monday and an endless coming-not-coming-down with something, and a glass of red wine.
Also, I always sporfle at the funny tagline our local channel advertises the Highlander reruns with - translated, it goes roughly like this: "Duncan is the only guy in the world who will see the Bold and the Beautiful from the start to the finish!".
ETA: Amanda and Duncan are also very very nice together.

Title: Past and Present, Hand in Hand
Author: Someone probably totally obvious
Written for: jinxed_wood
Characters/Pairings: Methos front and centre, Amanda, Duncan, Rebecca, hints of the Horsemen, OC; implied Amanda/Methos/Rebecca, Duncan & Methos & Amanda friendship
Rating: PG-13
Wordcount: 2 784
Author's notes: A big thank you to [personal profile] baronjanus and [personal profile] ceruleancat for the invaluable beta work, everything that is still wrong is my fault. Written for the recipient's prompt "Holding Hands".
Summary: Methos is trippin' - or tripping down the memory lane.

Read it at Archive of Our Own
Reat it at Highlander Fiction Archive

And as I never got around to reposting my last year's story, I'll just add it here, too.

Title: A Rewalian Winter or The Devil's Disciple
Author: That Dog Who Pulls the Grinch's sleigh
Written for:[personal profile] unovis
Characters/Pairings: Amanda/OFC
Rating:PG-13
Word count:appr. 5800
Warnings:Um, references to obscure-ish chapters of history and an OFC?
Author's Notes: Thank you dresta11 and dorothy1901 for beta, all that sucketh still is a blame to be laid at my door. Thank you, amand_r for running this challenge, and for the patience you had for my lateness, and for making me write after a long dry spell. And thank you [personal profile] unovis for all your stories that have given me countless hours of enjoyment, I know I'm a sucky feedbacker, but I do adore and appreciate them. A lot. And last but not least - thank you, the Highlander fandom, for, you know, being out there, still going, still immortal.
Summary: Amanda finds a - perhaps not really conventional - student.

Not that it would be visibly much different from the recent (and not-so-recent) state of affairs, but I'll continue to limit my online presence mostly to sporadic lurking for a while yet. Nominally, I am on my vacation, but in reality, I'm trying to tackle my long-dormant PhD - seeing as how I can nau haz an actual supervisor, and be a part of a research team, with, you know, actual theme and financing and data and stuff. So, as I'm awfully good at procrastinating anyway, I'm trying to limit aforementioned procrastination and be vevvy vevvy quiet. Not hunting wabbits, though, but a) writing an article and b)giving a presentation on a conference next week (eep! I've been teaching and giving lectures for years, but a 15 minute presentation on a conference is still a first and faintly scary prospect). So, um, if you'd want to wish me luck or something, I'd be glad (it might lessen the panic, perhaps?). Wishing y'all good times and fun and hoping to surface come September.

Today has been hot and unpleasant and full of stoopid and suck. And I'm really really really tired. So, trying an alternative approach - on the grounds of a)cats go well with everything and B)cats make everything better, here, have some kittens:

Photobucket
moar kittehs under the cutCollapse )
Those are all shelter kittens, mostly from May this year. Kittens are by and large all rehomed by now, though only one mother cat has found a new home. But these are the ones that will find a home, and the ones I can look at without sadness and fear - I don't have to put any of those down. They're the happy stories. Two of those litters are actually mixed - there were motherless kittens fostered under accomodating queens. And fortunately, queens are usually very accomodating towards strange kittens.
And to finish it off - this is one of the two cats that live in the shelter, permanently. This one has had an inner ear infection that has left him with a permanent head tilt, and he has lost the tips of his ears to the cold some winter past. But he's happy and fat and shiny, and surveys his kingdom, and sleeps on the sofa in the personnell room, and never needs to worry about being homeless again.
